Challenge

Food waste is a huge problem worldwide. It puts strain on our waste removal systems as well as landfill sites. This wicked problem has many different angles. The challenge is to elevate food wastage in South Africa for a specific target group. This approach allows a complex problem to be broken down and creates solutions that make an impact. From the in-depth research conducted, we found that students and young adults often end up wasting food as a result of poor planning.

Results

We envision a future where young adults in South Africa value fresh produce and adequately plan the food that they buy to reduce wastage. In order to do this, we tackled the problem of food planning. We found that Students and young adults who have recently transitioned to living on their own often need to gain the skills or life experience to properly plan the food that they buy. Therefore we wanted to educate this target group on how they can buy correctly instead of buying more when their food goes off. We also found that this target audience often ends up contacting their mother for daily advice on how to do things, for example, get stains out of shirts or boil rice. Therefore, we created the “Hey Ma” extension of the PnP app. This AI-based software creates a meal prep plan for you based on a budget and your previous consumer habits. Using the app and proper meal prepping, you can earn cash-back rewards, if you bank with Capitec. Capitec was chosen as it is the most student/young adult-friendly bank with the lowest costs therefore fitting the target group's needs. Furthermore, the app has an AI chatbot that will send daily reminders to eat, do your dishes or check up on food that might be going off, just like a mom would. The campaign extends to a YouTube channel where many easy and quick recipes are taught to educate young adults further. Print media is also used to gain attention to this new app extension.
